Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that allows you to make voice calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone line. Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other people using the same service, but others may allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number - including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers.
VoIP works by converting your voice into a digital signal that can be sent over the internet. The digital signal is then sent to the person you are calling, where it is converted back into an analog signal that can be heard through their phone.
There are many different VoIP protocols, but some of the most common protocols are:
- H.323: H.323 is a standard that was developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). H.323 is a complex standard that is not widely used today.
- Session Initiation Protocol (SIP): SIP is a standard that was developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). SIP is a simpler standard than H.323 and is the most widely used VoIP protocol today.
- Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP): RTP is a protocol that is used to transport real-time data, such as audio and video. RTP is often used in conjunction with SIP.
- Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP): RTCP is a protocol that is used to monitor the quality of service of an RTP session. RTCP is used to provide feedback to the sender about the quality of the transmission.
VoIP and the public switched telephone network (PSTN) are two different telephone network systems. The main difference between VoIP and the PSTN is the way that they transmit signals. VoIP transmits signals digitally, while the PSTN transmits signals in analog form. This makes VoIP more reliable and provides better voice quality than the PSTN.
- Cost: VoIP can be cheaper than the PSTN, especially for long-distance and international calls.
- Features: VoIP offers a number of features that are not available on the PSTN, such as caller ID, call waiting, and voicemail.
- Portability: VoIP can be used anywhere there is a broadband Internet connection.
- Reliability: VoIP is not as reliable as the PSTN. If your internet connection goes down, you will not be able to make or receive calls.
- Emergency calls: VoIP may not be able to connect to 911 or other emergency services.
- Security: VoIP can be a security risk.
