A cable modem is a type of network bridge that provides bi-directional data communication via radio frequency channels on a hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) and radio frequency over glass (RFoG) infrastructure. Cable modems are primarily used to deliver broadband Internet access in the form of cable Internet, taking advantage of the high bandwidth of a HFC and RFoG network. They are commonly deployed in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
A cable modem works by modulating and demodulating data signals for transmission over a coaxial cable. The cable modem is connected to a cable television (CATV) network. The CATV network is a hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) network, which means that it uses a combination of fiber-optic cable and coaxial cable.
The fiber-optic cable is used to carry the signal from the headend to the neighborhood. The coaxial cable is used to carry the signal from the neighborhood to the home. The cable modem is connected to the coaxial cable in the home.
The cable modem communicates with a cable modem termination system (CMTS) at the headend. The CMTS is responsible for managing the cable modem network.
There are many different cable modem standards, but the most common standard is Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). DOCSIS is a standard that was developed by CableLabs. DOCSIS defines the physical layer and the media access control (MAC) layer of the protocol.
There have been several versions of DOCSIS:
- DOCSIS 1.0: DOCSIS 1.0 was the first version of DOCSIS. It was released in 1997. It has a maximum download speed of 40 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 10 Mbps.
- DOCSIS 1.1: DOCSIS 1.1 was released in 1999. It added support for Quality of Service (QoS).
- DOCSIS 2.0: DOCSIS 2.0 was released in 2001. It has a maximum download speed of 40 Mbps and a maximum upload speed of 30 Mbps.
- DOCSIS 3.0: DOCSIS 3.0 was released in 2006. It has a maximum download speed of 1 Gbps and a maximum upload speed of 200 Mbps.
- DOCSIS 3.1: DOCSIS 3.1 was released in 2013. It has a maximum download speed of 10 Gbps and a maximum upload speed of 1 Gbps.
Cable modem and DSL are two different technologies for providing internet access. The main difference between cable modem and DSL is the way that they transmit data. Cable modem transmits data over coaxial cable, while DSL transmits data over telephone lines.
Cable modem is a shared connection, which means that the bandwidth is shared with other users. This can cause the speed of a cable modem connection to slow down during peak hours. DSL is a dedicated connection, which means that the bandwidth is not shared with other users.
